Infrared Thermal Imaging
Originally developed by the U.S. military as an advanced weapon sighting technology FLIR or Forward Looking Infra Red thermal imagers were eventually adapted by firefighters to aid in identifying hidden fires in walls and looking for victims in low-visibility smoke environments.
Unlike x-ray technology infrared does not see through a material but graphically measures subtle differences in surface temperatures that may be the result of some hidden deficiency.
Sustainable Building Performance employs the FLIR ® brand of thermal imaging cameras to identify areas where a home is losing valuable heating and cooling energy to the outdoors. This aids in prioritizing air sealing and insulation efforts, pinpoints air infiltration sources, and can often reveal present or past water damage in a home’s building materials.
