Some of the Benefits of Universal Design

Universal Design makes a home safer for everyone. Stepless entries make it easier to bring in furniture, packages, and strollers. Families are able to welcome relatives and friends with disabilities. Residents who develop disabilities are more likely to be able to remain in their homes rather than having to move or remodel. The resale of the home is enhanced because home buyers are attracted to homes that welcome their aging parents and provide easy and advantageous use for themselves.

Universal Design Features

Universal Design is not about specialized spaces and furnishings. It is about incorporating simple features and products that accommodate the widest range of people regardless of age, size, and ability.

Important Universal Design elements include:

•A smooth path without steps to the front door, garage entry, or any other entrance that leads to the major living areas
•Doors and hallways that are wide enough for passage even with crutches or when carrying something
•A route without steps to the primary living areas and at least one bedroom and bathroom
•Floor surfaces designed to be slip-resistant
•Operable parts that are easy to use without a tight grasp or a great deal of force, located within everyone's reach
•Good general and task specific lighting
•Adequate space in kitchens to maneuver and approach each appliance
•Counters at various heights
• One bathroom with adequate space to maneuver and approach each fixture
• Reinforcement in the walls behind the bathtub and water closet for future installation of grab bars if necessary
• Healthier building materials - for example using paints and finishes with low or no volatile organic compounds
• Adjustable height shelves and rods to put storage within everyone's reach
